Subject: Delayed by bad weather

We arrived in the Falkland Islands on Monday. Due to some bad weather we have been delayed here for two days. This has allowed us all to play tourists.

We are based in Port Stanley, the capital and only town on the islands. It is a small, pretty town with a population of around 2000, over two thirds of the total population of the islands. Venturing outside Stanley means braving some very rugged tracks. A 4x4 is a must for everyone here, not just mums on the school run.

The Falklands have a rich variety of wildlife, especially seabirds. We were able to see 5 different species of Penguins in one trip. The penguins didn’t seem to mind us or our cameras and allowed us to get very close.

Having battled through some stormy weather whilst deploying mooring buoys, the James Clark Ross arrived in Stanley on Wednesday morning. She will be our home for the next two weeks. Each of us scientists has our own cabin, small but comfortable. We have a lounge and bar area to relax in, and are served food in the galley. Dinner is formal, with everyone dressed up and five courses served in rapid succession by the team of stewards.

Our schedule is to sail tomorrow and we have lots to prepare before we sail. For newbies like myself – a big part of this is just finding where all the important places on the ship are, especially the places where food is served!
