Sample air and sea temperatures from Discovery

Sample MODIS satellite data

Sample sea surface height data.

During the MadEx research cruise scientists onboard the Discovery will make a large number of measurements and take samples of the water at different positions.
Some of the data are collected automatically and sent back via satellite. The ship will also receive satellite images to help the researchers decide where to go to collect the most interesting data.
You can find these different types of data by following the links below.

Data from RRS Discovery - Winter 2004/05
Plots of position, air and sea temperature, atmospheric pressure, wind speed, etc.
Recent MODIS (ocean colour) images for the MadEx region
Ocean colour data give information about the amount of chlorophyll in the water.
Since all plants contain chlorophyll, ocean colour tells us how much plant-life there is in a particular area.

Recent sea surface height anomaly (SSHA) for the MaxEx region
SSHA is also known as ocean surface topography (OST).
Because currents create 'hills' and 'valleys' on the sea surface, SSHA can give information about currents and eddies.
