The first ocean colour satellite was launched in 1978 and operated for 8 years. NASA's SeaWiFS was launched in 1997 and is still making measurements. Others have now joined it.
Ocean colour satellites cannot see through clouds. Although they see all of the Earth every day, some areas are so cloudy that they get good data only a few times a year.
Measurements from ships, buoys and platforms help us turn the satellite data into useful information about ocean plants.
