Ocean colour

spacer Did you know?
  • The first ocean colour satellite was launched in 1978 and operated for 8 years.

  • NASA's SeaWiFS was launched in 1997 and is still making measurements. Others have now joined it.

  • Ocean colour satellites cannot see through clouds. Although they see all of the Earth every day, some areas are so cloudy that they get good data only a few times a year.

  • Measurements from ships, buoys and platforms help us turn the satellite data into useful information about ocean plants.
